Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dogs are also called Berners Berner Sennenhunds (in Switzerland). These affectionate dogs have a flashy, tri-colored coat; the chest part has a white Swiss cross. Berners are strong enough to do heavy work. Traditionally, this breed was used by the Swiss to help in herding and drafting.

Berners played an important role in farming— herding cattle, protecting the family, and pulling carts of commercial goods to be sold in the neighboring villages. Despite their good manners and hard work, they almost went extinct early in the 20th century when farmers had more access to alternative transportation means. They were, fortunately, preserved by some fans. Aside from their good looks, Berners are nice-tempered. They are loyal, loving, smart, and love to please. They’re also trainable if you let them think first about your command. Most importantly, Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their easy-going outlook on life.
